What excites you about working with lawyers and law firms?

I enjoy watching lawyers apply what we teach them to change their career paths. It’s gratifying to see them build the practices they want and become leaders of their firms.

What advice would you give to an associate who’s about to make partner?

Don’t just bill hours; instead develop both internal and external relationships. Don’t just look for work in your practice area, collaborate with clients and colleagues by learning about a particular industry and your
client’s business.

Give an example of someone whose career path you changed.

A lawyer in his early 40s told me, “I don’t do business development. I have no idea how to go about it.” His initial goal was to land just one public company client. After the training and implementation of our business development process, not only did he land that client, but within three years he was leading a practice group in his firm. This experience completely changed his career path and his life.

How does your past experience help you in your job?

My work as an in-house lawyer at 3M was by far the most important preparation for what I do now. The company was all about creativity and entrepreneurship. I participated on operating boards and was involved in every aspect of business, R&D, manufacturing, sales and service. Seeing different business and legal opportunities and challenges has helped me work with law firms to develop specific business development programs for each.

Describe a unique moment in your career.

I was a member of 3M’s team to develop joint ventures for the first manufacturing projects in Russia and China. It was exciting to work on cross-border projects with both business and legal teams and different cultures.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I’m a private pilot and flying is one of my passions, but I no longer fly. I took a date out flying at dusk and had to declare an emergency. I was able to land the plane—but I never piloted again.
