Meet Heidi M. Wilson

Heidi believes that networking — both internal and external — not only is key to business development, but also can be fun. At Cochran, she helps lawyers in private practice hone their networking and business development skills and advises those who want to become successful in-house legal counselors. Her own experience tells a tale of success in both environments. Heidi began her legal career at Faegre Baker Daniels’ predecessor firm and went on to work for three NYSE-listed companies — Tennant Company, The Musicland Group and Medtronic. In addition to her legal and business network, Heidi is active in the Twin Cities non-profit community, currently serving on the board of the Guthrie Theater and North Memorial Health.

What excites you about working with lawyers and law firms?

The lawyers I work with are amazingly talented and our interactive discussions energize me. I enjoy sharing my hard-earned lessons and helping them become even more successful.

What advice would you give to an associate who’s about to make partner?

It’s time to move beyond just being a great lawyer. You need to actively engage with your internal and external networks to expand business and develop new opportunities. This may sound daunting but there are so many enjoyable ways to engage that it can actually become fun. That said, business development requires as much discipline as you give to your legal practice. Develop a plan, work the plan and have a trusted advisor help hold you accountable for sticking to it.

Give an example of someone whose career path you changed.

While a partner at Faegre, I mentored an associate who was unhappy as a litigator. I encouraged him to look at other career alternatives. He ultimately joined the law department of Fortune 100 company and went on to become General Counsel of their European division. He is an amazing talent and now mentors other lawyers.

How does your past experience help you in your job?

During my years as General Counsel and a member of the senior leadership team, I learned what in-house lawyers, management and boards want and expect from their outside legal service providers.

Describe a unique moment in your career.

Picture this. I am General Counsel at Tennant. I am simultaneously closing on two international acquisitions — one in Scotland and the other in Brazil. Before the board meeting starts at 7:30 a.m., I need to review a raft of overnight changes so we can finalize the deals and issue public announcements. I have all the documents and schedules laid out on my office floor and am crawling around in my pencil skirt suit and heels as I cross-check everything. My CEO walks in to ask me something and I give him the kind of glare that only a mother knows how to give. He takes one look at me and backs out of the office. We successfully completed both deals and the Board never knew how close we were cutting it. My CEO and I still laugh about my evil eye and I never did find out what he wanted to talk to me about that day.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

When I started my career, there were few women in “big” law. I was told that because of my gender, I couldn’t try cases and couldn’t develop a meaningful book of business. It was the perfect motivation for me to prove the naysayers wrong — and I did!
